The same rules apply if you are dividing a negative number and a decimal.

+ /- = - ,    -/- =+,     -/+ = -

15/-.5 = -30

-540/1.2 = -450

Here is a link to a helpful video covering how to divide with decimals.

Transcript Dividing Sign Numbers
Today we are going to go over division. Here are our examples. Twenty divided by negative two which is negative ten. Negative twelve divided by negative three is positive four. The third one is negative eighteen divided by positive nine is negative two. Now let’s go over the rules for dividing sign numbers. The rules are just like addition and subtraction rules. If you have a negative divided by a negative those two are pairs so we have a positive, so negatives always come in pairs. Negative divided by a positive, the negative doesn’t have a pair so the answer is negative. Positive divided by negative. Again the negative doesn’t have a pair so the answer is negative. Finally a positive divided by a positive is positive. So let’s go back and look at our original problems in slow motion. So the first problem is a positive divided by a negative. We only have one negative and it doesn’t have a partner therefore the answer is negative. On the second one we have negative twelve and this fraction is another way of saying division e divided by negative three. These two negatives are partners and pair up therefore my answer is positive. The third one is negative eighteen divided by a positive nine, since we only have one negative the answer must be negative, eighteen divided by nine is two. So there are our answers.

Dividing Negative Numbers

Example problems dividing negative numbers

Remember "like signs produce a positive number "unlike signs produce a negative nymber"

Dividing a negative by a negative

Remember "negatives come in pairs" or " unlike signs produce a negative"

Dividing a positive by a negative

Let'  review the rules for dividing positive and negative integers.

  • When you divide two numbers with the same sign the product is positive.
  • When you divide two numbers with different signs the product is negative.

or.... remember that....

Like signs produce a positive number and unlike signs, a negative number.
or.....

Remember, negatives must come in pairs.
-4/2 = -2
-15/-5 =3     Notice when you apply the "negatives come in pairs" you
end up with a positive outcome because you already
                      have a pair of negatives

15/-5= -3
In Math numbers can either be greater than zero or less than zero. We distinguish these numbers by calling them either a positive number or a negative number. We use the symbol - to indicate a negative number. On a number line a positive number will be to the right of zero, and a negative number will be to the left of zero.

When you divide negative numbers it can get a little tricky trying to figure out if the answer is positive or negative.

Dividing a negative number by zero

Whenever you divide a number by zero the answer is "undefined" It doesn't matter if the number is positive or negative.
-6/0 = undefined
5/0= undefined
